Ivan Barry, MA
British Born in 1959, Ivan spent 20 years overcoming and recovering from an abusive and violent childhood. He spent time in institutions, prisons and psychiatric hospitals and passed through much trauma as a violent and angry young man. Gang culture, soccer violence, self harm, all were themes in his experience, until he determined to break the chains! Ivan Barry has been reading Zen tarot cards for 20 years in the UK, Europe and the USA. He worked in TV and radio as a scriptwriter and researcher and recently completed 10 years of recovery focussed mental health work. Ivan has worked to help consumers find a voice and design and run their own services in England, Scotland and Ireland. He has helped set up and develop Hearing Voices groups, assisting both professionals and consumers to form alliances based on respect and trust rather than power. Mr. Barry is presently writing a book on his experiences within prisons and mental health services both as a consumer in his early years and as a professional consultant and ally to services with a recovery based focus. He has found America welcoming and seeks to relocate here in the coming year to continue his work. Ivan believes in creative solution finding and campaigns in Europe for democratic service development. He runs personal transformation workshops in prisons, in the UK. These can easily be adapted for personal or other group uses. Simple and powerful Zen insights which lead to recovery plan formation and integration of body, mind, spirit. Ivan has Taoist leanings, loves poetry, children and veggie food. In recent years he has been singing and recording in a rock band in Coventry, England as part of his own ongoing recovery!
