Sacred Melodies of JAYA will open

Hidden behind the Himalayas, the culture of Tibet, and especially its tradition of mystical performing arts, for centuries remained largely unknown in the West. In recent years, however, with the exodus of the Tibetan refugees and the ensuing contact with the international community, there has been an unheralded surge of interest in all things Tibetan. In particular, Tibetan temple music and dance has begun to attract an enormous audience in North America, mainly due to the continuing tours of the monks of Drepung Loseling, Tibet's largest and one of its artistically most prestigious monasteries.

  • The Drepung Loseling monks are featured on the Golden Globe nominated soundtrack of the motion picture Seven Years in Tibet, starring Brad Pitt (Columbia).

  • The drepung Loseling monks have performed with Philip Glass in the live premier presentation of his Academy Award nominated music/score to Martin Scorses film Kundun (Disney).

  • Two of the CDs by the Loseling multiphonic singers, Sacred Tibetan Temple Music, and Sacred Music Sacred Dance, achieved a top ten listing on the US charts.

  • Tibetan multiphonic chanting was an integral part of the opening ceremony music composed by Mickey Hart at the 1996 Centennial Olympics in Atlanta.

  • On previous tours they have shared the stage with Philip Glass, Kitaro, Paul Simon, Patti Smith, Natalie Merchant, the Beastie Boys, and many others.
