R. Carlos Who?
“Did you know R. Carlos Nakai and the ‘Wilde Boys Trio’ was coming September 08 to the Masonic Center?” I was asked, recently.
“R. Carlos who?” I replied, adding, in nearly the same breath, “Where’s the Masonic Center?”
“301 Wisconsin Avenue. Madison. Just down from the state Capitol”, I was told, learning that September 8th was a Sunday. 2 – 5 PM. Plus, afterwards, the audience will be encouraged to personally meet these four globally famous music masters in person. They will even sign autographs and CD jackets!
“H-E-L-L-O…” There was a pause followed by a certain gasp of incredulity.
“You mean you don’t know who R. Carlos Nakai is…? The ‘Wilde Boys’…? William Eaton Luthier, Strings… Will Clipman, Percussion… Nawang Khechog, Winds…? They’re an award-winning group and have been nominated, individually or as a group, seven times for a Grammy. In 2001 they were finalists in the New Age category.”
“Then you have to go!” I was told. “Who knows when we’ll get another chance like this?”
A CD, In a Distant Place, was quickly slipped into the player. Music that can only be described as ethereal began to transform and transcend. Reed and wind instruments blended to create a cultural, creative and mystical experience incorporating multi-cultural musical aspects of Traditional, Jazz-fusion, Blues, Spiritual, and New Age forms.
Carlos has played Carnegie Hall, and toured throughout the United States, Europe and Japan. William has performed with numerous orchestras and released four recordings. Will has preformed on over forty recordings and creates like Nakai mythopoetic storytelling. Nawang, a Buddhist monk for 11 years, has studied with the Dalai Lama and released several albums.
A treat for the ears and the mind, the sounds were both familiar and rare. They included: vocals, overtone chanting, native American and Tibetan flutes, Harp, Synth and spiral Clef guitars, and an Eagle whistle blended with the percussion of Gong, Congas, Hoop and Taos drums, Cymbals, and Bellstick.
